Default Goodbye Fast Food

My husband and I gave up fast food a year ago this past month. We've noticed a huge difference in the way we feel. It was the hardest thing to give up because we both loved fast food and it's so easy!

Has anyone else given up fast food? If not, what have you given up that you miss the most? How do you get past the urge to fall off the wagon? How do you feel now?

We haven't completely given up fast food, but we have definitely cut back on it over the last year or so. It's no longer convenient for us now that we live out in the middle of nowhere. If we are going to be driving into town and eating there, we are going to be going to a real restaurant and eating healthier foods. It is more expensive than fast food, but since we only do it a couple of times each month instead of a couple of times each week, it all evens out.

I am still working on breaking this habit. I used to eat fast food 3+ times a week, and with a lot of will power I have it down to 2 times per month. I don't count places such as subway fast food, and I am extra careful of what I purchase.

You might not believe this, but my family and I never have fast foods. I know that the last time I was in a McDonald's was 1976 with a few girlfriends and I had a cup of coffee as we planned a wedding shower for a close friend.

The foods in fast food places always seemed too salty and greasy for my taste. I remember I had it once and felt so sick right after, that I just never wanted to try it again and I never did.

The closest thing we used to have that is close to a fast food, was a broccoli, green pepper Pizza from a local authentic pizzeria in my Brooklyn neighborhood. But we even stopped that after a while. Getting it just died out.

I think it might be genetic or something. No one in my immediate family eats fast foods and we all came to it individually.

I used to eat fast food all the time before I was diagnosed. Mcdonalds was my favorite. What I miss most are the ultra large vanilla malts at Dairy Queen I used to get at least once a week. A 6" Subway sub once a month is all I get now.

Hi Micah,
Maybe this might help you forget the fast food Shake. I doubt it, but it is a shake of sorts and only has 100 calories.
Vanilla Shake
(makes 1 serving)

1/3 cup frozen low-fat, sugar-free vanilla yogurt
1/4 cup crushed ice
1/4 cup skim milk
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

In a blender, combine the frozen yogurt, crushed ice, and milk, turning the machine off and on several times until blended, about 1 minute.
Add the vanilla. Blend for another 30 seconds.
Pour into a tall glass and serve with 2 straws, if desired.

Enjoy!

What a delicious treat! Those are good. I still miss the Dairy Queen malts, but at 224 carbs they're definitely off my list of treats.
