I'd probably let the child (if diabetic) "trade in" whatever "bad"
candy they got for either the type of goodies they can have or maybe
for another "prize" they pick out. I don't know, but I don't think I'd
be able to take the hardline "sorry, you can't go trick-or-treating
because of your diabetes"... just wouldn't feel right.

Or maybe allow the kids to plan a Halloween party where you control the food being served and you could probably hand out little treat bags with *good* snacks so that the kids won't feel left out of Halloween celebrations but still won't regret not having the sugared down stuff.

As sugar free candy is a little bit more expensive than regular candy would you still buy it to hand out to the kids that come to your door? So if you have any left overs (which we do every year) then you only have the sugar free candy left in your house.

Would I? Oh, I see what you mean... no, I didn't mean hand it out at the door, I meant offer it as your party favor to the handful of kids who'd come to the party I suggested. No, I wouldn't buy it to hand out to all the trick-or-trickers.

I have heard that you can retrain yourself to not have a sweet tooth, and this is even more true for kids.

Make absolute certain that you eat five pieces of fruit every day! So many people think they eat the full servings of fruit but they really don't. You need to let your body start to enjoy the natural level of sweetness found in real foods, then sugary snacks will start to taste too sweet.

I never had a problem with wanting sweets. Sugary foods always made me nauseous really fast and I just never ate them. I do adore salty foods, but then again, I keep away from those too nowadays and can't say I really miss them.
