Default What Is Sugar Alcohol?

OK.. just got a box of Russell Stover (Sugar Free) Breakfast Bars.. It says it has 18 vitamins and minerals along with calcium.. looks good to me but i looked at the carb count and found that each bar has 19g of carbs.. too much for me i thought..

on the side of the box is a disclaimer that says:

SUGAR ALCOHOL: We use a blend of sugar substitutes the US Government refers to as "sugar alcohol." These sugar substitutes are slowly metabolized carbohydrates that generally cause only a small rise in blood glucose levels.

interesting.. so..

why can't they use this in twinkies? ) does anyone know of any other foods that sugar alcohol is used in?

As far as I know sugar alcohols are to sugar what olestra is to fats. The may have less claroies but because they are not absorbed well in the intestines you tend to get the runs or bloat a bit and they can cause body odor. So I'm not in a big hurry to consume them in any significant amounts.

Wow, for something that sounded so good on the surface, it sure may have some side effects that aren't too great, eh? But then again, enjoying a box of goodies that uses it and not planning to make whole meal plans out of it would make a difference, too. Like everything else, it probably has to be used in moderation.
