Actually, ALL (autoimmune) Type 1 diabetics have a genetic disposition to the disease. Autoimmunity consists of a genetic disposition , and a TRIGGER in the environment that is needed for the disease to show itself and develop. Many people think this is a virus. The purpose of the vaccine is to modulate the faulty immune response that occurs in people prone to Type 1 diabetes when they are exposed to the trigger.
So, in theory, it would work for most if not all autoimmune diabetics.
You have to remember not to confuse MODY (which is the type of diabetes you have) with Type 1. Even if you take insulin, you do not have Type 1 autoimmune diabetes, you would still have MODY. MODY is a rare genetic defect that runs in families that yes, cannot be prevented with a vaccine. This vaccine also would not help Type 2 diabetics, as Type 2 is not autoimmune.
I have heard many "updates" on vaccines for T1, I hope this pans out of course, but nothing ever seems to come of them!
Shall see!
