Default Dad just diagnosed

Hi Everyone,

I am here to learn whatever I can about diabetes, as my dad was just diagnosed actually a couple of days ago. He is 56 years old. He has an appointment with a dietician this week. He visits a lot and eats here, so I'm going to be checking out some good recipes.

This forum has a lot to offer and I'm excited to get started!

Welcome! Glad to see you here. It is so much easier for people to make their diet and lifestyle changes if the family gets into it too! Let us know how it is going and I am sure we will help any way we can

Default excellent handbook

Go to lulu.com and get a copy of Factoring diabetes. Its an ebook.
But its so simple and great first self managment book. It explains alot of everything.

Congrats on your dad being diagnosed.
Its never easy to accept what you have but knowing that there are others in the same boat and dealing with it makes it easier.
I am here if he needs support and advice or input and a shoulder to frustrate on and learn from.

Thank you for all of your kind words everyone.

Thanks a bunch for the ebook recommendation, too. I found it and I'm going to have him check into it. The more information he gets the better. He doesn't let it show (too much), but I know it scares him a lot.

Default diabetic support

If you are in an area that ahs a diabetic suport group, I encourage you and hm to go together. The local hospitals all over the world now offer diabetes self managment classes. IN some states and insurances its mandatory. Both of you shoudl go as well.
But if you or your dad is not able to go, there are diabetics like myself who are also willing and able, aside from being diabetes educators( like myself) to be that one on one support,

julie

I think it's really awesome that you are supporting him so wonderfully. This is half the battle. When you have friends and family that are so involved, it makes the person that has been diagnosed feel that much better knowing he has a great support system already put in place.

I think it's really great that you're gathering research to help your dad!
I'm sure it isn't going unnoticed and that he greatly apppreciates it. If
he follows the guidelines his doctor and dietician give to him, he's already
a step ahead of many people who go off trying all kinds of odd things
instead of just using the proven ways.
