Who Here is Thinking About Trying a Pump?

I have used a Cozmo pump for about 2 years. I can't imagine how I would survive if I had to go back on shots! If anyone has any questions about pumping, how it works, the Cozmo pump, etc. post here!

Is the cozmo the one that checks your glucose levels every 5 minutes? I'm about to get one, but not sure which one yet..

No. That is the MiniMed system. The actual MiniMed pump doesn't check your glucose levels yet though! It comes with ANOTHER separate device called the Guardian. You will have 2 separate insertion sites, one for your insulin infusion, and one for your glucose sensor. The sensor will transmit the data to your pump, and you can visually track the direction of your BG on the pump screen to make changes sooner, but all insulin boluses still are given manually by you.

The Guardian is a bit bulky, but some people don't mind.

I have heard they are coming out with a smaller "better" version after January, so I would hold off until then before you buy one.

You can still use a continuous glucose monitor like the Guardian with ANY pump, it just won't transmit the data and you will have to look at the results straight off the monitor.

I like the Cozmo because it is waterproof (MiniMed isn't), and it can use any infusion set. MiniMed pumps make you use MiniMed sets (proprietary), and I don't like to be forced into using their products only. It is also easier to find a store that will have infusion sets I can use in the case of an emergency. The Cozmo pump also looks more discrete (like a cell phone). This is important to me.

I plan to get the Navigator, a new continuous glucose monitor that is coming out hopefully by Jan. I think it's made by Abbott. It's supposed to be much more accurate than the Guardian, and may allow for insulin adjustments based on it's readouts. With the Guardian, you need to do a fingerstick to confirm a reading if you will be adjusting your insulin.

I will continue to use the Cozmo with it.

It is really individual choice. Some people swear by MiniMed, but l love my Cozmo! Shop around to find what you like best!

I just wanted to add that all of the major pump companies will send you free information kits and videos on their pumps if you ask. Some will even let you try a "loaner" pump for a few days (with saline inside not insulin!) to get a feel for it.

Since it's a big investment, don't be scared to explore.

There are also 2 less common brands I think, but names elude me. Amigo? I think that's one!
