Glucose tolerancec test First may I comment on a sugar test.. this is an archaic misnomer. being as we are in a diabetci forum lets call it what it is, Glucose level.
A simple fingerstick on am orning fast will give an indication yes, but what you are referring to as a sugar test is actually avery long anc\d complicated process.
A GTT, glucose tolerance test begins with a fast for at least 12 hours.
Blood is drawn and a plasma base level is detrmined along wiht your insulin level. If after that comes back in the 70-90 range, there is no need to go further. However, if its over 90-95 then the test continues. A glucose drink is given. The solution has a certain percentage of glucose. Your blood is drawn every 15, 30 and 45 minutes and at 2 hours. Readings are indicated. You must drink the entire bottle of this yucky sweet and thick drink.
You are then told to wait at least an hour after the last blood draw and to go and eat a specific food menu. The menu must be followed.
again blood is drawn at 15, 30, 45 and 2 hours afterwards.
A ketone blood level is also done, as well as urine ketone and urine proteins and spillover urine tests. This urine testing is also known as a Chem10.
After all of this is done and you remain in the normal ranges, you are good to go. However if at any time your glucose numbers rise and do not fall appropriately then insulin is given and remnitored to check fall time.
Its not as easy as a simple " sugar test".n Because fingersticks even in full blown diabeetics have variables that affect its morning outcome. Such as high proteins the evening before is a biggie.
