well, people are naturally shy about mentioning any medical condition - not just diabetes!

if they don't inform their employer and then collapse, then their employer will be rather nervous about having them come back or hiring other diabetics because of the misinformation being put out by the employee collapsing... a little information goes a long way!

Nice idea, Lavanay. And even nicer to know it's legal!

Your statement is also true, Thumper. Anything a little outside the norm is not accepted very easily in this society, especially with all the health and safety regs.

it's sad, but everyone who either has diabetes or has someone who is suffering from this needs to constantly be educating the public on this... it's not fatal and it's not something to be scared about!

For people who suffer with epilepsy it's worse.

I don't know about the US, but in the UK it's a nightmare. It seems like employers have an excuse about absolutely everything possibly triggering an attack.

I echo the statements about not mentioning that you're a diabetic, until after you're hired.

Of course, if the application has one of those boxes to check ,"if you can't do the job required because of health reasons," and you don't check it ; don't be too surprised if your new boss isn't thrilled about your condition.

Better to keep it under yoru hat for a few weeks, if at all possible. If you are feeling well, you can do your blood checks in the bathroom during your lunchhour.

I wouldn't suggest using kind of insulin shots at work without first notifying your boss, because what if someone goes wrong?

It's a shame that in a society like ours, people with illnesses have to keep quiet about them, no matter what they be.

Education is a growing concern. Unfortunately it will happen as many people under 20 come down with it more. If you present as a self-managing diabetic, just paste a smile on and let the manager know your breaks will be sterile area insulin shots. It's your ealth to manage. i would say it's a much better hire than any other group.

Wait until they get a tax credit for it. Then you'll see.
