Default How much exercise?

I don't really know how much exercise one should do in the fight against diabetes. I realize diet and exercise are very important, but how much exercise? And should it be a grueling workout, or is taking a walk sufficient? I know if a person needs to lose a lot of weight they should get more exercise, but what about the average person?

Default Exercise & Your Doctor

My suggestion would be to talk to your doctor depending on your weight and also if you have any other medical conditions. You don't want to hurt, but help yourself in the long run.

My sister excercises like a mad woman and she is diabetic. She works out at the gym, she runs, walks, plays golf. She is having a hard time losing weight even though she exercises all the time. She has tried to increase the amount she eats since she is working out a lot. She has tried to not do as much resistance training and more cardio. She is having a hard time figuring it out.

Yes, I should definitely discuss the exercise thing with one of my doctors. I have pulmonary problems, so I know I'm not going to be able to over-exert.

Maybe she is gaining muscle as she loses fat. Muscle weighs more than fat so she could be getting healthier without it actually showing up on the scale. Does she feel better? That would be the main thing.

Losing weight with diabetes is a losing battle since the blood sugar regulation required to trigger burning fat and calories is what triggers insulin cycles.

But if you work out and build muscles that burn calories while regulating blood sugar with regular diet, even sleep, stretching and yoga to keep things from churning your system into a breakdown, that's the best you can hope for.

I think diet and excersise is important for anyone especially someone with diabetes. I have to agree that you should talk to your doctor first.

Simply walking for 30 minutes or more each day helps. Take the opportunity to move whenever possible. Walk up the stairs instead of taking the lift. Walk to the shops, get off the bus one stop away from your destination. It all adds up. Healthy eating is also important. If you have a family history of diabetes, then it's important to chat to your family doctor about your situation. She or he can advise you on the right steps you can take to stay healthy.

Thumbs up

It seems to me that like with everything else in life, excesses aren't good. I suppose (unless a doctor disagrees) that if someone, diabetic or not, obsesses over too much exercise, it wouldn't be a good thing.

I am having a hard time losing weight and I exercise everyday. I obviously watch what I eat too. I have even joined Weight Watchers to help control my portions and make me even more aware of what I am eating. I am newly into the weight watchers so I have lost a little but I definitely need to lose a lot more. I am at risk for a few reasons I am over weight and it runs in my family. I enjoy exercising but I just have to stick with it because I know in the long run it will be better for me.

I'm more in agreement with looking how you can fit excercise in with your everyday life.

If you go shopping, why not park your car further away from the shop and not closer. All little things like that.

My friend got a dog to give her more exercise ... and then used to drive to the park which was a five minute walk away!
