Question Snack List

According to the tip of the day at American Diabetes Association, some good snacks to keep on hand include things such as cereal and pretzels, popcorn (air popped), baked tortilla chips with salsa. Add things like a little peanut butter to celery or bread, or low fat cheese to crackers.

What things would you all add to the list?

I've had good luck with trail mixes, either the ones you make yourself or from Sam's Choice/Walmart... just be careful of what you put in them!

How about lots of whole grain cereals and fresh fruit?

Sugar-free gelatin, for a quick fix.

Yes, I would think that both trail mix and cereal might be good ideas... if it's cereal without the added sugars. And you're right, thumperfive, you'd have to watch what kinds of things would be put into the trail mix. I assume it would be pretty easy to buy or make some with a taboo ingredient or two without even realizing.

it's pretty darned easy to grab a granola bar without checking the content - nowadays it's got everything from sugar to EXTRA sugar with the idea that it's somehow "healthy"...

blech!

Yes, I've noticed that! And not just a concern for diabetics, either. When I'm watching calories or on a health kick, I have grabbed a box of something like granola bars with a thought that they're healthy. I am amazed at the number of calories and fat in some of the brands! Just 'cause it's granola or trail mix doesn't mean it's healthy!

it's amazing how many manufacturers are taking advantage of the public with scams like that... it may be sugar free then they up the sodium level to dangerous amounts... always read the label!!!

That's very important to stress, thumperfive. It isn't just things like granola, either. It's cereals that are supposed to be healthy... and the individual packets of oatmeal even. You'd think oatmeal would all be just as healthy, but not so when it comes to hidden sodium and sugars.

and it's not usually labelled "sugar", to boot - it'll say things like fructose or other "buzzwords" that are sugar-based but they don't want to say sugar outright. And the sodium levels on some of these "healthy" treats is through the roof!

That's for sure... products rarely say "sugar" on the ingredient list. That means everyone has to learn all the other names for it as they pop up. Who has time?! Pretty sneaky, I'd say!
