Default How often do you check?

What kind of schedule to you set to check your blood sugar. Do you do it so many times a day, or after you eat or right when you wake up. When is the best time to test your sugar levels?

Everyone that I know check their sugar first thing in the moring before they eat or drink anything. My grandmother has a schedule for herself she gets a glass of OJ and all her pills ready then she sits down checks her sugar, writes it down, then moves on to the OJ and pills this way she remembers to do everything!

Yep! That's the best time to check your blood sugar. You should also check it about 30 before you eat and 30 minutes after you eat. It's a pain in the but to have to monitor your self all the time, but you have no choice.

I check first thing in the morning too. I have gotten into such a routine that if I didn't do it I would be lost. It is just another thing I do everyday. Just like I remember to put on my shirt for work I remember to test in the morning. At first it was a pain to do and try to remember but now it is second nature and I don't even think twice about it.

What about checking two hours after a meal? Don't you do that, too?

Default Checking....

Morning all........
I check at least four times a day. One fasting in the am and adjust R insulin based on that before I take my Lantus. I have breakfast of something. and then during the day. I always do a two hour post prandial testing. 30 minutes after you eat is not enough time to allow beta cells to fully discharge insulin in the small intestine where catabolism/metabolism begins.

Also almost every time I exercise I do a check and after exercise I do a check and before bed I do a check. I know thats more than four but on average .
Oh and when I am sick I am always checking at least every hour.

I used to be on oral meds but when they started to fail to control I began testing more.

Glucose testing -- anytime you want. If sick, can be more than 12 times a day. If you feel a little shaky, test. First thing in the morning, and prior to any meal. The more testing, the better your blood sugar level control which means a lower A1C result.

Default false reading errors

Some monitors give false readings. Like my accucheck has always read high and cuased me to inject too much insulin because of it.
No matter how much I tested it read high. As is the case with some that contually read low. and allowed me to eat what I wante because it read low. Now I double test. When I feel the reading is worng I do another test with a side by side with another glucometer.
I found that thre eof m meters read well and two complimented each other perfect.

So testing can also lead to false information.

Checking always in the morning and throughout the day. I become obsessive when I ill. Check all day long because BSLs are up and down and meds I'm taking affect the results. A cold or flu puts stress on my body and gets everything out of whack. The more testing the better.
