Yes, diabetes may be hereditary. Type-1 diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or juvenile onset DM may or may not be hereditary. There is only about 5% chance that a child of a type-1 diabetic will inherit it. Obesity or being overweight is a risk factor for developing type-2 diabetes or non-insulin dependent DM (NIDDM).
